NORTH HERO TOWN GARAGE
Town Garage Kevin Daignault,
Public Works Foreman A Special "Thank You": On behalf of the North Hero Library, we would like to express our appreciation for the excellent job Kevin Daignault and Robin Rousseau have been doing in maintaining the parking area of the Library. The parking area is consistently plowed and sanded. PUBLIC WORKS ISSUE Wave action from strong winds and high water levels, most common on Lake Champlain in the spring, eroded the embankment over six feet from the original shoreline on Lakeview Drive. This erosion accumulated to this depth over a number of years, depending on the length of time the lake stays above the average level. The annual erosion is estimated at several inches per year. The erosion caused a road safety issue as the road shoulder was less than four feet at several points. The road itself is not a wide thoroughfare. Cars can easily run off the road and into the lake. Soil erosion, such as this is cited in the Vermont Better Backroads Manual to be an environmental hazard in that it contributes to destruction of fish habitat from soil particles, as well as oil and grease from the road surface washing directly into the lake. As a town that relies on tourism for a large part of its economy, such road erosion also can lead to deteriorated water quality in general, with subsequent effects on the local economy. Loss of this road, if erosion were allowed to continue, would make it difficult for year round and seasonal residents and visitors to access the many homes and camps along Lakeview Drive. To correct this erosion problem, 628 yards of rip rap was recently placed to maintain bank stabilization along Lakeview Drive in North Hero resulting in increased road safety and control of soil erosion from the embankment in the future. The project was partially funded by Vermont Better Backroads Grant Program.
