FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY

The friends of the library need a few good friends.  This year they lost Ann Clark who worked with dedication on the Library’s Annual Plant Sale.  Sarah Baugher will not be available to put in the time she usually does for the plant sale.  So, if you can help in any way, large or small, please call the library at 372-5458.

The plant sale is the Friends of the Library main fundraiser.  Each year the funds raised are donated to Library improvements.  The computer desks, the outside lights, the children’s room furniture, and other improvements have been made using Friends contributions.

The Friends of the Library also contribute to the summer book discussion programs.

LIBRARY HISTORY
"North Hero Then & Now"

Did you know this about the history of the North Hero Library?
"Then and Now" a booklet  Published by the North Hero Bicentennial Committee in 1991 and edited by Paul R. Healy).
The North Hero Public Library was voted into existence at Town Meeting March 4, 1913.Maintenance of the library was financed by a $15 appropriation with the trustees instructed to apply to the Sate Board of Library Commissioners for state aid.the Library was housed in different homes for many years.
The town's first librarian was a trustee, Mrs. Charles Tudhope.  She was followed by Ruth P. Allen, Evelyn Tudhope, Maude Hicks, Lois Trombley, Mabel O'Neil, Lois Trombley again and Linda Hazen Norris.  She was followed by Mrs. Catherine Tudhope, Joyce St. Peter, Jeanne Giard and Barbara Mooney.
With the completion of the Town Hall, the library found a home in the basement.  While it was no longer necessary to cart books from house-to-house.there was one major drawback-dampness.  In 1938, librarian Allen wrote, "I wish something could be done about the library's 2218 volumes now shelved in a damp room which will eventually ruin these books.
One librarian, Linda Hazen Norris served when she was a high school senior.  At that time, 1962, the library was only open for an hour and a half on Thursday nights.  The town appropriation for the library was $76 and the salary was $2.00 a week.  By 1971, the hours had changed to Saturday mornings.
During the 40 some years of the library being in the Town Hall, there were sporadic efforts to secure a more appropriate location.  Dampness and the increasing number of books and readers, made it increasingly obvious that a solution must be found.  The formation of the Friends of the Library, led by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ratner, aroused interest in restoring the vacant and deteriorating "City Schoolhouse".  At a special Town Meeting, May 1979, the town voted, and appropriated funds, to restore the old school house.
With the cooperation of the community, the library moved to its new quarters in 1980.  The Governor, Richard Snelling, spoke at the dedication ceremony held on August 27.  In 1989, the town voted approval of the use of the schoolhouse's north room fo9r the library.  This added much needed space for the growing collection and for the cramped children's area.  There was now room for storage and a work area.  It also allowed a more spacious and attractive facility.
While it was not feasible to preserve the original interior, all was not lost.  The original old pressed tin ceiling still serves.  The school bell disappeared many years ago but a replacement donation is still in use.  The exterior is little changed.  However, if one looks closely, they will note the missing piece of fascia by the front door has been displaced.

Compiled by Catherine Derby, Librarian Emeritus, Ann Porter and Ruth Ratner.

LIBRARY NEWS

Come to the library to see the exhibit of the “Creative Kids”.  Creative Kids is an after school art program taught by Aielsa Chastenay.  Last week the kids displayed weavings and this week we have gesture drawings.  The kids in the group are: Madison Kinney, David Campbell, Steven and Aiyanna Chastenay, Dylan St. Hilaire, B.J. Bennink, Mikayla Groseclose, Laura and Sarah Campbell, Hunter Kinney, Zachary Bennink, Morgan Landry, Hannah Gariety and Gabrielle Timms.  If anyone has been left out, tell Mrs Chastenay and we will include you next time.

Classes at the Library:  The North Hero Library has been used for classes for several years.  So, far, all of these classes have been in the visual arts.  The Library will be used for a drawing class, “Drawing for the Terrified” taught by Michael Strauss.  Michael’s philosophy is “that drawing can be an acquired skill, not just a talent, and that most can learn how to draw if they spend the time and energy needed.  Since drawing is a foundation for painting, those who paint can benefit from taking these workshops.” Michael’s workshops take place on Monday’s beginning at the end of April.  Call Dorice Clark at 372-8822.

Bill Biddle is offering “I Used to Hate Poetry But Look at Me Now!  The classes include four interactive workshops that will help you find your voice as a writer.  Each session will include reading and discussing a few poems by established poets, followed by some quiet writing time, and finally sharing our work.  A supportive atmosphere will help you develop your own approaches to writing.

Bill has taught writing and literature at UVM as well as in China, South Africa, and India.  Call him at 372-8255 or email abiddle@uvm.edu for more information or to register.

Vermont Online Library

Our Library subscribes to Vermont Online Library and you can access it from home.  It is filled with information for everyone from young children to specialized scholarly research.  Many professional journals are there.  I’ve used Consumer Reports.  And the information is reliable and researched.

There are sites for children to access to help with homework.

One of the most popular sites is the Health and Wellness site.  I’ve used to read about the medications I take, why they work and alternatives.  There is a section for Alternative Medicine as well.  I’ve found that Doctor visits are more productive when I have some idea what we’re discussing.

There is no cost since the Library subscribes and again—you can access the Online Library from home or from the Library.  I’d be happy to show you what I’ve learned about using the Online Library.  The one catch—there is a password and you have to come to the Library to get it.  So come in and I’ll show you what you need to know to use this tremendous resource. (see right column)

New Board Game

The Department of Libraries on behalf of the Secretary of State’s Office has just shipped a fun new board game for children ages 10 and up, called On the Road to Congress, to us.

Students in grades 6-8 learn that running for office is a progressive process.  It is hoped that children who are interested in playing and learning about election campaigns will come to the Library and play.  The Civics Team in the Secretary of State’s office can’t wait for children who visit our library to be the first to drive the rocky road to Congressional Office.

AUDIO:
New Audio Cassettes: Stephen E. Ambrose “Citizen Soldiers” and “Flags of our Fathers”.

Adopt an Author

Our library has an “Adopt an Author” program.  Adopt your favorite author or authors and you will receive their new books as soon as they are released.  When you adopt an author, we call our bookseller and put your author’s latest releases to be automatically sent to us.  You will be billed the library’s book cost which is a substantial discount from retail.  Most adopted books are between $13-$18.  When the Adopted books come in, we will reserve the book for you and call you to let you know it’s in.  This program allows you to be the first to read your favorites and allows the library to build our collection –a win-win situation I think.

Martha Stuart

We have a large collection of Martha Stuart magazines which we will be happy to give away.  If you are missing one or more from your collection, pick them up here.
